CSK vs SRH: Match Preview
CSK Eyeing 6 out of 6
Chennai Super Kings have had a dismal IPL 2025 campaign so far, managing to win only 2 out of their 8 games. From the outset, CSK has struggled with inconsistency and has failed to settle on a stable playing XI. Traditionally, they’ve built their strategy around strong performances at home, but this season, even that advantage has faltered—they’ve lost 3 out of 4 matches at Chepauk.
Adding to their woes, Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the season due to injury, leaving MS Dhoni in charge once again. While Dhoni brings immense experience, CSK’s primary concern remains their underperforming batting order. They hold the lowest cumulative strike rate (124) among all teams and have a powerplay run rate of just 8.5, one of the worst in the tournament.
However, there have been a few positives. Their bowling unit has held its own, and the rise of young talents has been a silver lining. MS Dhoni, despite being uncapped this season as captain, has thrived in his role as a finisher, scoring at a strike rate of 175 at the death, the best among batters with over 100 runs this season.
Youngster Ayush Mhatre impressed on debut, while Shaik Rasheed's traditional, composed batting has added depth. In the bowling department, Khaleel Ahmed and Noor Ahmad have been standout performers, claiming a combined 23 wickets in 8 matches.
With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, CSK are expected to make some changes. As hinted by coach Stephen Fleming in a recent press meet, Dewald Brevis who recently replaced Gurujapneet Singh could make the XI, and Sam Curran or Nathan Ellis may also feature.
SRH Sailing the Same Boat
Sunrisers Hyderabad have also had a turbulent season, marked by inconsistency despite assembling a well-balanced squad at the auction. While they possess the firepower to dominate games, they often crumble under pressure, especially on slower, tackier surfaces, as seen in their most recent outing against Mumbai Indians.
Last season, their top three were key to their success. This year, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma are among the top scorers, but their performances have been patchy. Ishan Kishan, slotted at number three, has failed to deliver apart from the century he scored in the season opener.
On paper, SRH has ticked all the boxes. But on the field, results have not gone their way. A few bright spots include the emergence of youngsters Aniket Verma and Eshan Malinga, who have consistently contributed with both bat and ball. However, star pacer Mohammed Shami has underperformed, particularly in the powerplay. In contrast, Pat Cummins has been the lone warrior in the bowling department, leading from the front and delivering with consistency.
SRH has played one home and one away game so far this season. Their recent memories at Chepauk aren’t encouraging; they lost both their last two visits, one of which was the IPL 2024 Final against KKR. Despite their poor record at this venue, SRH will be determined to break the trend and get the better of the Men in Yellow to revive their playoff hopes.
