“I Will Play in the IPL” - Mohammad Amir's Shocking Claim Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has voiced his ambition to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2026 despite ongoing diplomatic strains between India and Pakistan.

The 33-year-old, who has retired from international cricket, shared his plans in a recent interview with Geo News, expressing a preference for the IPL over the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as he seeks new opportunities in his career.

Notably, Mohammad Amir, whose wife, Narjis, holds UK citizenship, is reportedly pursuing a British passport, which could potentially allow him to bypass restrictions and participate in the IPL.

"Honestly, if I get the opportunity, I'll definitely play in the IPL. I'm saying this openly. But if I don't get a chance, then I will play in the PSL. By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL," Amir said as quoted.

The speedster is currently playing for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL 2025. He has taken four wickets in the three innings so far at an economy of 9.74. While the PSL and the IPL this year are running simultaneously, Amir opined that it will not happen next season.

"I don't think IPL and PSL will clash next year. Because this year, the ICC Champions Trophy was everything. If I get picked in PSL first, then I can't pull off, as I will be banned from the tournament. If I get picked in IPL first, then I can't pull out from that league as well. Now, it depends on which league I get picked in first. If the IPL auction happens first and I get picked, then I can't pull off and will not play in the PSL. And if the PSL draft takes place first, and I get picked, then I can't pull out from the tournament," he added.

Pahalgam Terror Attack Weakens Possibility of Mohammad Amir’s IPL Participation

Amir’s comments came against the backdrop of heightened tensions following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where at least 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. The attack has further strained India-Pakistan relations, with India reinforcing its stance against engaging with Pakistan, including in cricketing matters.

This incident has cast a shadow over Amir’s aspirations, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has maintained a ban on Pakistani players in the IPL since 2009, largely due to concerns stemming from events like the Mumbai attack. Several Indian cricketers have condemned the attack on social media.

Amir’s eligibility hinges on securing a UK passport, a process that remains uncertain, and navigating the BCCI’s stringent policies. The Pahalgam attack has added further complexity, with public and political sentiment in India likely to oppose any relaxation of restrictions on Pakistani players' participation in the IPL.
