IPL 2025 Match 56 MI vs GT Highlights: GT Edge Past MI in Rain-Thriller at Wankhede to Go Top of the Table

Hardik Pandya vs GT

Gujarat Titans concluded their first 10 overs with one run ahead of the DLS in a rain-threatened match. When Karn Sharma came in to bowl the 11th over, he conceded 8 runs, which was sufficient for Gujarat Titans given their required run rate.

Ashwani Kumar returned to bowl his second over, delivering the breakthrough that Mumbai Indians were hoping for as he dismissed Jos Buttler for 30 runs off 27 balls. This came after a dropped catch and a review that was overturned in the on-field decision, leading to Buttler leaving the crease.

Sherfane Rutherford with few lusty blows

Sherfane Rutherford entered as an impact player and made a significant contribution, smashing Will Jacks for three consecutive boundaries: two fours and a six, reducing the required run rate. With a light drizzle threatening play, umpires paused for a moment but then allowed the 14th over to continue.

Ashwani Kumar bowled his third over, and Rutherford continued his impressive hitting, scoring 13 runs off that over. At this point, Gujarat Titans seemed in firm control of the match until rain interrupted play for 15 minutes.

Once play resumed, Gujarat Titans needed 49 runs off 36 balls, with Shubman Gill and Sherfane Rutherford at the crease, facing Jasprit Bumrah. As expected, Bumrah delivered for his team by dismissing GT captain Shubman Gill with a well-angled full delivery that hit the stumps, leaving Gill to depart for 43 runs off 46 balls. Gujarat Titans now needed 44 runs in the last 5 overs.

With momentum on Mumbai Indians’ side, Hardik Pandya turned to Trent Boult, who had one over left. Boult bowled and dismissed Rutherford, trapping him LBW. Following that, Gujarat Titans were left reeling at 118/4 with two new batsmen at the crease.

Jasprit Bumrah Delivers again!

Jasprit Bumrah returned for his final over, which would likely decide the match. Sharukh Khan managed to sweep Bumrah for a boundary but played a rash shot shortly after, losing his wicket, while Bumrah completed his spell with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 19 runs.

With 31 runs needed off 18 balls, Gujarat Titans were under tremendous pressure and were 2 runs behind the DLS score. Ashwani Kumar bowled the 18th over, claiming another wicket by trapping Rashid Khan LBW, as Gujarat Titans lost yet another batsman. Ashwani Kumar finished his spell with another tight over, leaving GT needing 24 runs in the last 12 balls, while rain added more drama to the game.

Rain interrupts the play again

As the rain intensified, players left the field with Gujarat Titans now 5 runs behind the par total, and the match was called off with a time set at 12:25 AM. It was an unfortunate sight for the Titans as heavy rain fell at Wankhede Stadium. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians were in the winning position, leaving GT hoping for the rain to cease.

GT seal the deal in the last ball

The match resumed after the rain stopped, and GT needed 15 runs off the final over. Deepak Chahar was given the task of bowling the last over. Rahul Tewatia struck the first ball for a boundary, a well-placed shot in the gap.

On the next ball, Tewatia could only manage a single, failing to elevate his shot. Gerald Coetzee then took strike and hit a massive six off a poorly placed delivery from Chahar, quieting the crowd. With 2 runs required off the last 3 balls, Deepak Chahar made a dramatic comeback by dismissing Gerald Coetzee. However, Mohammed Arshad hit the last ball straight to Hardik Pandya, who missed the direct hit, allowing GT to complete the single and seal victory in this thrilling, drama-filled match

The match had its ups and downs for both teams, with rain adding to the excitement. Ultimately, Gujarat Titans won convincingly despite some challenges along the way. Mumbai Indians need to regroup to stay in contention for a top-two spot, while GT moves to the top of the table with a healthy net run rate. What a thriller it was at Wankhede, sponsored by rain!
