As the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) nears its climax, the focus shifts to Ahmedabad, where Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will battle it out in the Qualifier 2. The game is set to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on June 1, Sunday, with the winner earning a place in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The playoff stage has already seen its share of drama. Punjab, finishing on top of the table in the league stage with 19 points, slipped up against RCB in the Qualifier 1. That defeat pushed them into a must-win situation. Mumbai, who came in fourth, knocked out Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Eliminator to stay alive. The stakes could not be higher now, with only one ticket left for the grand finale.
As we arrive closer to the game, there is a rain threat looming. It rained in Ahmedabad on Saturday and it even disrupted the Punjab Kings’ practice session on the eve of the big clash. Now, this begs the question - who will advance to the IPL 2025 final if the Qualifier 2 gets abandoned. We will answer that for you.

PBKS vs MI: Who Advances to Final If Qualifier 2 Gets Washed Out?
There is some concern around the weather in Ahmedabad. While Sunday’s forecast is mostly favourable, there remains a small 20 percent chance of showers around 5 PM IST. Conditions are expected to improve later in the evening, but the slight threat of rain cannot be ignored.
As per the rules, if a playoff match is abandoned due to weather and no result is possible, the team that ranked higher in the league stage advances.
That means if rain plays spoilsport on Sunday, PBKS will progress to the final by virtue of finishing first on the IPL 2025 points table, while fourth-placed Mumbai would be knocked out.
"If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match," the IPL 2025 playing conditions read.
For a team that has never won the IPL, a slice of luck could finally help them break their title drought.
However, it is unlikely to happen as the IPL governing council has allotted an additional two hours for the competition of a playoff match. There is no reserve day for any game except the final.
Punjab Kings Eye First Final Since 2014, Mumbai Indians on Sixth Trophy Hunt
For Punjab Kings, it is a monumental match. They have not featured in an IPL final since 2014 and tonight, they might break that jinx.
For Mumbai Indians, it is about keeping their legacy alive with a possible sixth championship. They last won a trophy in 2020.
