Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori listed more than one reason behind their loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday, April 23. SRH posted a below-par score on a good batting wicket, and MI chased the target down inside 16 overs.
SRH posted 143 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs after being 35 runs for 5 wickets in the ninth over of their innings. Heinrich Klaasen (71 runs off 44 balls) top-scored for the franchise, but his contribution came in a losing cause.
A run chase of 144 runs was not going to challenge the mighty MI batting lineup. Once again it was Rohit Sharma (70 runs off 44 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (40* runs off 19 balls) who anchored the chase and gave the team their fourth win of the season.

Toss Played An Important Factor: SRH Head Coach Daniel Vettori
Daniel Vettori, the SRH head coach, lamented the loss and cited many factors behind the side's performance at home. He said that they tried to be too aggressive in the powerplay and ended up losing too many wickets.
"When you go in there early on, you're trying to obviously maximise that power play. And unfortunately, we weren't able to, and we kept losing wickets. Once we realised that the surface wasn't what we anticipated, then we needed to build towards that sort of 180 score. That, unfortunately, is difficult to do when you're 24 for four after the power play" said Vettori.
The SRH head coach also believed that the toss and the pitch were huge factors behind his team's loss, as he believed that the pitch was different from the previous pitches they played on.
"I think obviously, the toss was important. We wanted to bowl first because the conditions were vastly different, [it was a different] wicket to the previous ones. I mean, we've discussed that it's a 280, 250 wicket. So conditions changed dramatically. So to be able to get that assessment early around what a par score was, is obviously difficult" he said further.
He stated that the third reason his team lost was that they were unable to read the conditions properly. He said that they took some time to understand the pitch conditions, and by the time they did, it was too late, as they went hard inside the powerplay.

As his assessment after the game, Vettori said that the batters should take the onus of scoring the runs inside the powerplay, which did not happen against MI. Heinrich Klaasen (71 runs off 44 balls) was the only batter who adapted to the conditions against MI.
"When you're in a powerplay situation, you still want to try and maximise those two fielders out. So there's still some emphasis or onus on the batsmen that are there to try and score some runs. And today was very unfortunate that they couldn't get it done" he concluded saying.
With the season past the halfway mark, Sunrisers Hyderabad have just two wins from 8 games and are placed ninth on the IPL 2025 points table. They are in must-win territory in their remaining six matches in the league stage. They next play against CSK on April 25 at the Chepauk, where they have never beaten the home side.
