In a massive development, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) have reportedly locked in Kumar Sangakkra as the successor to Rahul Dravid in the head coach role ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) season. Notably, Dravid quit as the coach last month after being at the helm since last year. However, in this IPL season, RR finished ninth, managing to win just four of the 15 games.
Sangakkara, who served in the directorial position for three seasons from 2022 to 2024, managed RR to reach the final in 2023 and reach the playoffs in the 2024 season. It was widely touted that he will continue the dual role since RR managed to build a good team and form in these three years. However, RR decided to appoint Rahul Dravid as the head coach after he helped India clinch the T20 World Cup in 2024. Notably, the former India captain was appointed for a long term role in helping RR nurture young players, which is their USP.
